In the late 70s I got popped for possession of a controlled substance. It was a felony. I was sentenced to 3 years probation. At 2.5 years I went back to court and the judge annulled the original charge and issued a ruling that it was as if nothing had happened and all rights and priviledge were restored as if it had never happened. I went on to grow up, got education, went to work and had a TS/SBI clearance for years.
Then I went to buy my first firearm. Thank you Sarah Brady. No way except to have the Governor of the State pardon me. The application required 3 references from each place I have lived over the many years. There was no way. I have a CCP. It was kind of funny because when I applied they saw the old felony but it was so old there was no information so the Sherriff granted it. Some years later I moved to a different county and had to reapply and got a call from that Sheriff office that I had lied on the reapplication about a previous Felony. What Felony? I sent the 1981 ruling to the DA and he dismissed the issue.
I have guns, all privately purchased.. But I can't buy one 'legally'. But I can carry legally. What a darn mess.
