Been thinking about taking the plunge and building my first AR-15. Finally started browsing parts and man, there are a lot of choices out there. Some good deals if you dig deep enough, but honestly, I'm a bit lost on what's really worth it.

Planning to keep it simple with the basics to start. Thinking 5.56 is the way to go for a first build, but I'm open to other suggestions too. Is there a better caliber I should consider? Or is sticking with 5.56 fine for learning?

I could really use some advice on parts brands. Are there any you folks would suggest avoiding? I've seen some horror stories online. And what about hidden costs? Like, are there things I might not think about that end up adding to the bill?

Sometimes I wonder if I'd be better off just buying one already put together, but I feel like building it would be a cool experience. Anyone here have a killer story about a rookie mistake? I'd love to hear it so I can steer clear!

Thanks in advance for the advice. Really appreciate any tips, big or small.

Hidden costs are buying the right tools for the job and replacing brand new parts (trigger, handguards, stock and grips come to mind), because you don't like them, or find something you think you'll like better. 😉
