Been thinking about taking the plunge and building my first AR-15. Finally started browsing parts and man, there are a lot of choices out there. Some good deals if you dig deep enough, but honestly, I'm a bit lost on what's really worth it.

Planning to keep it simple with the basics to start. Thinking 5.56 is the way to go for a first build, but I'm open to other suggestions too. Is there a better caliber I should consider? Or is sticking with 5.56 fine for learning?

I could really use some advice on parts brands. Are there any you folks would suggest avoiding? I've seen some horror stories online. And what about hidden costs? Like, are there things I might not think about that end up adding to the bill?

Sometimes I wonder if I'd be better off just buying one already put together, but I feel like building it would be a cool experience. Anyone here have a killer story about a rookie mistake? I'd love to hear it so I can steer clear!

Thanks in advance for the advice. Really appreciate any tips, big or small.

Hidden costs are buying the right tools for the job and replacing brand new parts (trigger, handguards, stock and grips come to mind), because you don't like them, or find something you think you'll like better. 😉

RG where do you live? I have all the tools need (and then some).

As far as buying VS building. My favorite rifle is one I built to give my grandson when Im gone.
It is a flintlock rifle I made myself. It was hard and took weeks.

An AR15 we can build 20-30 a day. Thats how easy they are.

Caliber is a funny topic. 5.56 is the norm, but its a varmint round, not meant for bigger game.
I helped build my wife's, daughter's and grand daughter's AR.
None of them are 5.56. Why you ask? Because the most calibers I have are 30 caliber.
So for reloading, common powders and bullets.

sticking with 5.56 for the time being will suit you well for learning. Later if you want to change, its a barrel away for a bigger caliber.
