I am getting tired of buying whatever's cheapest at the store. What ammo do you guys prefer for different pistols? I've got a Glock 19 and a .45 1911, and I heard Federal HST is good for carry but I am wondering what works best for range time

Try Several!! Different guns and different shooters will have different favorites, even with the same models, so you can't fully rely on others' opinions!

My SA XDM 45 acp likes Sig Elite 230 gr; my RIA 1911 Elite likes Underwood 180 gr HP. My Sig P-365 likes Underwood 147 gr HP and my wife's likes 124 gr Federal HP. Previous Glocks all had different and distinct favorites. G-43 did not like Federal Light recoil 124s. Important to check function, reliability (mags & ammo) and accuracy to get the best combination!

I run Federal HST for carry in my Glock 19 and I trust it completely. For the range I buy cheap brass cased FMJ in bulk and shoot light 115 grain, it saves money and keeps the barrel happy

For my 1911 I like PMC Bronze for feeding and cleaning ease. When I am working up loads or doing accuracy drills I switch to match grade or quality defensive ammo to get consistent results and real performance data

Thanks! yeah, I figured I'd need to test different brands myself. I am gonna grab a few boxes of Federal, Sig, and maybe Underwood to see what shoots best in mine

Nice, HST seems to be the go-to. I'll try some cheap 115gr FMJ for range work.

What grain weight do you usually go with for the PMC Bronze in your 1911?

For my Colt 10mm, I have found that the Federal 180's work very well, either the FMJ or Hollow Pt’s.
Have not tried anything else, but I do have several hundred rounds of different brands and bullet styles to try yet.

I found the Underwood hardcast work well (my bear load for the local forests if I'm not packing my Ruger OM Blackhawk 45 Colt). I also like their 185 HP for a a defense load. I thought I'd like their Le High style loads but don't like the accuracy in my Glocks. I'll have to try the Federals to see how they work for me!

Make all our own practice ammo. Still under 30 cents around, either 357 mag or 45 ACP.
Cast boolits, home made lube, and powder and primers form before they prices went to war profiteer prices.

I would avoid the Sig ammo. You will have noticeable bullet set back if you chamber it more than once. In fact Sig even says not to chamber it more than once.

Hornaday Critical Duty can be chambered more than once. It’s designed to be chambered repeatedly.

My go to’s for defense are Hornaday Crotical Defense/Duty, and Gold Dot and HST for 9’s. Corbin and Underwood’s and HST for 45ACP.

For range ammo it’s either Winchester or Federal for 9 and 45.

For 40 S&W I use Winchester Defense in the black box. They are JHP’s with a polymer plug and they are priced like range ammo, if you buy them right. $18.00 a box of 50, and they are slightly over pressured, though not marked as plus P on the box.
