Staring at the front sight

My instructor told me to stop staring at the front sight and actually look at my target first and it felt backward but I shot way better. It seems the counterintuitive thing is just the correct thing..
 
You hit what you’re looking at.

If your intention is to shoot the front sight, by all means stare at it.
On the other hand, if your intention is to put a round in the center ring…..concentrate on the center ring.
 
Shooting is full of those backwards lessons, do the weird thing the instructor says, suddenly your groups magically shrink
