What a CROCK!!!!
!!! Domestic swine, wild pigs and "wild boar" all have 36 chromosomes! Some will exhibit 37, occasionally! This is called a "Robertsonian Translocation" and occurs when a long chromosome with an offset centriole (junction) will break the longer strands off to form a "pseudo" chromosome! (Benefit of a grad course in genetics!) When this occurs in humans on Chromosome #21, it will result in a "Trisomy 21" condition which expresses itself as Down's Syndrome. Occurs most often in older women and (rarely) in older men.
Moore imported "wild" boars not from Russia but Bavaria where they most likely had already bred with escaped domestic swine! It created a "hunting ranch" at Hopper's Bald. The first hunt was a disaster: the figs stampeded through the fence and later bred with escaped domestics. Moore later became game manager for Hurst Ranch in Central California and trapped some of the crossbred "boars" and brought them to Hurst Ranch in San Simeon. FOOTNOTE: Hurst loved to party with Hollywood stars. W.C Fields, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. and others would come up, get drunk, and turn Hurst's private zoo loose. They would then saddle the tame zebras and go lasso the semi-tame animals!
During the Great Depression, many farms in Central California went broke and the farmers simply walked away leaving the livestock to fend for themselves! The hills of Los Padres National Forest are covered in buckbrush, Ceanothus, and Coast Live oaks, all of which provide excellent forage!
I originally proposed doing my Master's Thesis on the more southern populations of wild hogs, much as Reg Barrett did his doctoral work on the population at Dye Creek near Redding (Do a search: He has over a dozen good papers on wild hogs! As is usual, I wrote an intensive paper on wild pigs in Cali. But, after DFG asked if I would do my thesis on "urban" bears three times and Jim Dole, my grad chair, asked "wouldn't I rather do my thesis on bears" (four times) and Anita, my wife saying "I REALLY think Jim wants you to do bears", I agreed to do urban bears!
