I'm curious, what do you guys keep by your bed for protection? Do you prefer a handgun, a shotgun, or something else? Also, any tips on lights or safes would be great!

Two large protection dogs and a Benelli. Do have a pistol in night stand, but neighbors are fairly close on 3 sides, so Benelli is my primary. Lights on both, not to see where I'm going, but for target identification.

We recently had a friend shot several times (just a week or two ago) and his mother killed during a break in, so we are a little paranoid because we realized it can happen at any time! This was at his winter home in Phoenix; Fortunately, his wife was here in WA State.

I keep a SA XDM in 45 acp with a green dot. Wife keeps a Glock 43 with a red dot. Quality HPs in both (We tested several for accuracy before selecting. Our EDC firearms are different and use different ammo.

Recently, I've debated moving the "house shotgun" (an older Model 12 with slam fire capability) or Henry Big Boy in 45 Colt with cowboy loads for inside the house.

I've a Python with 125 gr Underwood HPs on my desk and my EDC is by the door.

We also have a very large house dog that is a "barker".

I have a S&W 38 special which is attached the back of my file cabinet with Magnets, takes about 1 second to grab it while I am still in the bed.
The file cabinet is right next to the bed.

My nightstand gun is almost always my daytime carry gun. The Winter gun has an Inforce WML, but the summer pistol does not have a light. Regardless, I keep a hand-sized single function flashlight on my nightstand. By single function I mean a simple on and off. No confusion with varying brightness levels, strobe, contact taser and whatever else (though I do understand the need for lower levels of light - just not for immediate self defense after being awakened at night).
