How to tell if ice is safe

How do you judge whether ice is safe for fishing or crossing?

Take someone with you. If it holds them your odds are better.

I want at least 4 inches. I got put on some that was 2 inches or less and it was bowing. I didn’t realize how thick it was and got off immediately. When I was young I lived real close to Banks Lake. We use to fish and play hockey every year. The ice back then froze thick enough to drive vehicles on it.

This sounds pretty risky to me. I’d rather check ice thickness with a spud bar and follow safety guidelines than test it with a person
